Mason Olander and Ethan Hammons helped New Salem-Almont reach postseason success last week at the Class B state tournament in Fargo. Both qualified for state and helped New Salem-Almont finish as state dual runners-up.
Hammons had a strong showing at 138, taking eighth-place overall. Hammons was awarded the No. 8-seed for his regular season effort and proved his worth in the first round, pinning Lathan Stroklund (Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central) in 5 minutes and 31 seconds.
Next up, he faced Riley Zachmeier (Rugby) in the quarterfinals. Zachmeier entered the tournament with a record of 47-2. Hammons was hoping to upset the No. 1-seed Zachmeier but lost 5-0. Zachmeier, a senior, went on to win the tournament. Hammons gave him his closest match.
