Wildcats lose two close district tourney

By Jarann Johnson

The Center-Stanton Wildcats couldn’t get a lucky break at the District 10 tournament last week. The Wildcats lost two close games in Garrison by a combined five points and ended their season at 10-11 overall.
The first half didn’t start well for Center-Stanton. They were down 26-15 and couldn’t buy a bucket.
Center-Stanton was shooting 20 percent and only made four total shot attempts in the first period.
Center-Stanton quickly cut Washburn’s lead to under 10 points to start the second half. Morgan Vitek made two shots and Abby Hintz added a free throw, which cut Washburn’s lead to 28-20.
Washburn didn’t let Center-Stanton turn their hot start into a double-digit run. Instead of cowering, Washburn forced Center-Stanton starting point guard Madeline Henke into her third team foul and pushed their lead to 32-20.
Center-Stanton kept battling and trying to cut Washburn’s lead to under 10 points. Late in the third period, Center-Stanton finally got Washburn’s lead back under 10 points with a Henke 3-pointer.
Henke’s 3-pointer cut Washburn’s lead to 35-27 at the end of the third period. Henke wasn’t done bringing her team back and kept playing strongly in the fourth period.
