Wildcats open season on road starting season 0-2
The Center-Stanton Wildcats entered the year knowing that they would have to figure out a way to replace most of their senior starters from the 2013-14 basketball season. The Wildcats didn’t find a way last week and fell on the road twice.
The Wildcats first test of the year was against Standing Rock, a team that likes shoot 3-pointers and play fast. If the Wildcats were going to win, they were going to have to play strong defense and get back on defense.
Slowing the game down wasn’t something that the young Wildcats’ team could do in the first period. After one period of play the score was 30-10 in favor of Standing Rock.
The Wildcats did produce a better second quarter, only allowing Standing Rock to score 16 points, but still trailed by double-figures at halftime. The halftime score of the game was 46-21 and things didn’t change much from there for the young team.
The final score of the game was 91-48.
The Wildcats tried to avoid the same mistakes against New Salem-Almont later in the week and did early on. The Wildcats were within seven points at the end of the first period and were doing a good job of slowing the game down.
But a few quick 3-point shots and bad transition defense led to easy points for New Salem-Almont in the second period. New Salem-Almont’s lead grew from seven points at the end of the first, to 21 points at the end of the first half.
