Wildcats reclaim District 9 crown despite blizzard, tipping Warriors

Connie Miller named Senior Athlete of the Year

A sign sitting high above a bleacher full of Center-Stanton fans reads, "We’re so hot even a blizzard couldn’t cool us off." And as the final point was put on the scoreboard Saturday, the Wildcats proved that sign was not just another piece of gym artwork.

After stormy weather across the western part of North Dakota postponed the final day of the District 9 Tournament twice, C-S withstood Standing Rock’s attacks to claim the district championship, second year running.

In the first game of the title match, rescheduled from Thursday night to Saturday afternoon, senior setter Bailey Henke got the Wildcats off on the right foot with a four-point serving spree. That was the only run for either team until Jenny Erhardt rotated to serve for the second time in the evening.

Behind some incredible blocking and textbook offense, Erhardt served points 19-24 and teammate Becca Hovey closed out game one at 25-16.

"We handled the ball well and served aggressively," head coach Janet Erhardt said. "Since the final match of the regular season through districts, we passed very well."

The second game was much the same as yet again Hovey sent the game point across the net at 25-19.

"We played very even and pretty consistent all the way across," coach Erhardt said.
