Wildcats robbed in OT
By Jarann Johnson
The Center-Stanton Wildcats lost a tough home game to Heart River Saturday in overtime. The final score of the contest was 62-60.
In the early stages of the game, the Center-Stanton Wildcats were having trouble preventing Heart River from dribbling in for layups. Despite the Wildcats’ struggles on defense, they only trailed by one point, 12-11, at the end of one period.
Heart River pushed their lead to 22-14 in the second quarter with four minutes left in the half. Freshman forward Amber Frank nailed a 3-pointer, cutting Heart River’s lead to 22-17.
The Wildcats kept attacking and grabbed the lead late in the half, when they forced three defensive turnovers in the final minute of the first half. Abby Hintz, sophomore center, made two free throws late, giving her team a 29-28 lead.
Heart River went to a zone defense in the second half and built a 45-37 lead in the third quarter. The only problem Heart River faced was foul trouble -- at the end of three quarters, they were already in the bonus, which meant free throw shots after any foul for Center-Stanton.
The game went back and forth until the final minute of regulation. Heart River lead by three points, 52-49, and Rachel Vitek made a 3-pointer for the Wildcats to tie the game.
The game stayed tied at 52-52, even though both teams had multiple attempts to break the tie in the final minute. The Wildcats had a great chance to close out the game, up 59-57, after a 3-point play for Vitek.
