Wildcats stay atop Region 5

By Jarann Johnson

The Center-Stanton Wildcats entered last week hoping to remain amongst the region’s top four teams. Ending the season in the top four means having a bye during the opening round of the Region 5 tournament.
Center-Stanton kept headed toward their goal last week with two sweeps, beating Wilton-Wing 3-0 early in the week and topping Grant County 3-0 to end the week.
The Wildcats started the first set with a 10-3 lead and kept control until a serving error by Mykaela Jacobson spurred a 5-1 Grant County run. Grant County’s scoring spurt helped cut Center-Stanton’s lead to four points, 19-15.
Center-Stanton ended Grant County’s hot streak with a side-out and remained in control the rest of the way. Grant County junior outside Taylor Roehl committed a serving error, which gave Center-Stanton set point.
Center-Stanton didn’t convert their first attempt to end the set. Abbey Hintz, junior middle, hit the ball out of play but her team converted their next chance. Senior setter Madeline Henke jump-pushed the ball behind herself and it awkwardly climbed over the net and hit the floor for game point.
