Wildcats VB claim Region 5 championship
By Jarann Johnson
The Center-Stanton Wildcats entered the Region 5 championship game in high spirits. They beat Shiloh during the regular season in Bismarck and knew they could beat Shiloh on a neutral floor.
The Wildcats proved their regular season win over Shiloh wasn’t a fluke and topped them in four very competitive sets: 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, and 25-22.
Center-Stanton took an early 11-7 lead in the first set on an Abby Hintz ace. Hintz’s ace forced Shiloh Head Coach Gayle Geiger to call a timeout.
An early game injury took sophomore Josey Griess out of the game. Shiloh was down one player and was going to need to find someone to step up.
Despite being short-handed, Shiloh kept the set close. One of Shiloh’s biggest challenges was slowing down Hintz, a junior middle. Hintz recorded a block and kill on back-to-back plays, putting Center-Stanton up 18-14. Moments later Hintz recorded an ace, putting Center-Stanton up 22-16. Shiloh didn’t have a counter run in them, and fell 25-18.
The last point of the set was scored on a Shiloh passing error.
The second set of the match was tied 14-14 before Shiloh pushed to a small lead. Center-Stanton had a back row communication error and hit one ball out of bounds, which gave Shiloh a 16-14 lead.
