Wildcats VB open season; Fall to Region 7 champs
A lot of teams like to open their season with a soft and easy game to build confidence. But not the Center-Stanton Wildcats.
Head Coach Janet Erhardt wanted a tough team and scheduled the reigning Region 7 champs with two All-State returners for the Wildcats’ opener. The Wildcats were swept 3-0 by the Beulah Miners but the results of the game gave the Wildcats confidence for the rest of the year.
Early on, it looked like the Miners weren’t going to have any trouble against the Wildcats. The Miners grabbed a 10-3 lead after a Jaime Murschel, senior, ace.
That lead would stay close to 10 points until the Wildcats made a 4-point surge, making the game 14-8. At that point the Wildcats were gaining momentum, so Miners’ head coach Kevin Peterson called a timeout to drain out the Wildcats’ momentum.
Peterson’s move initially worked, but the Wildcats cut the lead down to a point after some great serving from Madeline Henke. Henke recorded consecutive aces, cutting Beulah’s lead to one point, 15-14.
