Youth football sign-ups here

By Jarann Johnson
Youth sports are the first start of a child’s athletic journey, and most kids want to play football. Parents have started to worry about the dangers of football, but both flag and tackle football options will be available to youngsters this fall.
Football season is approaching and two local park districts have football options available.
The Knife River Midget Football League offers tackle football in Hazen, and the Beulah Parks and Recreation department will be offering a co-ed flag football league for 1st–4th graders.
Hazen’s fifth and sixth grade tackle football league is open to residents from all over the area. Jerry Obenauer said the league has had athletes from Beulah, Hazen, Center, Stanton, Riverdale, Garrison and many of the other small towns in the region.
Last year the Midget Football League had about 70 participants. Obenauer said enrollment in the league ranges from 65-100 kids every year. Teams meet three days a week for practice: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Obenauer said games are played Saturdays and the league usually ends in the first or second week of the season, which allows for about six weekends of games.
