Comet girls advance in tourney

The Underwood Comets girls basketball team felt a little deja vu on Monday night at the start of their first round game of the Region 5 Girls Basketball tournament in Mandan. The Comets played the Grant County Coyotes, last year in the quarter-finals and lost in a heart-breaker in the final seconds of the game. This year, the Comets hoped for different results but it would take patience and a very positive attitude to get over the hump of the first half. The Comets had a lone basket in the first quarter by junior Alix Auck. Auck would have the next seven points and give the Comets the lead 9-8 with just over two minutes left in the half. The half ended with the Comets down 9-12. When head coach Toni Cottingham visited with her girls in the locker room at halftime she spoke of patience and staying positive. "Defensively I was very happy with the play of the girls," Cottingham said. "I knew the lid would have to come off that basket yet I also knew the girls were trying not to think about last year’s heartbreak after the first round loss."
