3-run bombs sink Hazen at state
By Jarann Johnson
The Hazen Astros entered the North Dakota Class B Legion state tournament as the unluckiest team in the tournament field. Hazen’s first round opponent was Carrington, the three-time defending state champion. The bad luck continued and seemed to like the third inning to show its face.
Hazen gave up one 3-run third inning homer in both of their state tournament games, which lead to an 0-2 state tournament showing.
Carrington made an emphatic start to their championship defense. Leadoff hitter Payton Smith smacked a triple off Hazen starting pitcher Chase Bruner. Bruner gave up a RBI single to Braxton Hewitt but kept the rest of the damage minimal.
Bruner and Hazen didn’t let Carrington get much early breathing room. Heading into the top of the third Carrington still only led 1-0.
