Baseball:Beulah sweeps Hazen
By Jarann Johnson
Sweeps have been hard to come by in Region 8 play this season. Monday evening Beulah showed why they are the top team in Region 8, sweeping Hazen 10-5 in the counter and 6-5 in the nightcap at Goldman Field.
The win moves Beulah to 7-1 in Region 8 play and gives them a three-game lead for first place. The counter started with Hazen making a strong move.
Hazen grabbed an early 2-0 first inning lead. Lawson Babb, Hazen senior, drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run and Steven Baardson hit into a fielder’s choice for the other run.
Hazen starting pitcher Jayce Zuern threw two scoreless frames to start the game and got some run support from his team in the top of the third. Hazen added two runs to their lead on a Beulah error, which pushed Hazen’s lead to 4-0.
Beulah rallied in the bottom of the third scoring three runs. The inning started with Zuern committing a pitching no-no – walking Beulah’s leadoff batter Dawson Bieber. Aaron Vallejo, a Beulah junior, made Zuern pay for the mistake, hitting a one-run double.
