By Jarann Johnson
Hazen ran through Beulah for the first two sets of a Region 7 counter last week. But Beulah summoned their strength and willpower late at home to win the game in five sets: 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 14-16.
Hazen jumped out to a big lead early against Hazen in Set 1 and closed it out for a 25-20 win. When Hazen started the second set they stayed in control of the match, jumping out to a 14-8 lead. But Beulah pushed back and tied the game at 17-17.
Hazen needed to thwart Beulah’s momentum to win the set. They used a small 3-0 run, featuring a Tia Bornemann kill, Hope Ternes kill, and a Paige Ehardt ace, to go up 20-17.
Once, Hazen had their late lead, they didn’t let go, winning 25-21. Now, they were closing in on a sweep against their archrivals.
Hazen had a chance to take control of the third set and win the match. Bornemann tied the game with an ace at 20-20. But Hazen struggled down the final stretch only scoring two more points, which allowed Beulah to claim a 25-22 win and gain more confidence.
