Bison claim No. 28; win big 46-18
By Lee Coleman
The Hazen Bison took the first step towards defending their state Class A championship Saturday with a resounding 46-18 victory over Des Lacs-Burlington in the first round of the 2014 state high school football playoffs.
Senior Hunter Steffen got the Bison rolling early, scoring on a 39-yard dash on an option right with a mere 16 seconds gone in the game and the rout was on.
“This was a good physical team we played and they moved the ball on us until we adjusted some things,” Bison Head Coach Rick Philion said. “Offensively, we played very well and Des Lacs came out with some stuff we hadn’t seen before, so I have to give our guys credit. They kept their assignments and did well.”
The Lakers responded after allowing the opening touchdown, driving 58 yards to the Bison six-yard line with a first down at the 7:54 mark. After a Laker timeout, the Bison defense rallied when Chase Bruner intercepted the ball in the end zone 47 seconds later, thwarting the scoring threat.
The action continued back and forth until 3:17 remained in the first quarter.
Steffen found a big hole and jaunted 29 yards for his second touchdown, putting Hazen up 13-0.
Des Lacs tried to claw their way back into the game with 10:02 showing in the second period, scoring on a 2-yard Eric Knutson power touchdown. Knutson gashed the Bison defense for 142 yards in the game.
