Bison claim third win over Miners

By Jarann Johnson

Close but just not quite there. Hazen won their first two battles with Beulah this year but knew those two didn’t really matter. It was the third place Region 7 tournament game that mattered most. Beulah tried hard but fell by two in the season finale for both teams, 63-61.
The first quarter was close and it looked like it was going to end in a tie. But, late in the quarter, Hazen got some key scores and built a 17-12 lead. Senior starting all-region guard Ashton Carter hit a 3-pointer and a late Beulah turnover lead to a buzzer-beater by Hazen senior forward Kendra Slaubaugh.
Hazen kept their small lead in the second quarter but couldn’t get it to double figures. They did stretch it to nine points at one point, 28-19, after a basket by junior forward Madi Leintz. But they still failed to get a 10-point margin. Beulah battled back before the half with some big shots from junior guard Nessa Iverson.
The junior guard made two 3-pointers at critical times. Both 3-pointers cut Hazen’s lead from eight points to five points. The first one came when the score was 30-22 and the second one when the score was 33-25.
