Bison get Miners again
By Jarann Johnson
On Jan. 9 Hazen went to Beulah and won a Region 7 opener for both teams by six points. Last Thursday the teams met again in Hazen for a non-regional game, but the results were the same. Hazen came out on top 50-42.
Early on both teams struggled to score. In the first few minutes Hazen had two missed shots and committed a travel violation. Beulah committed a shot-clock violation and the teams were tied 0-0 two minutes into the game.
Ashton Carter, a senior starting guard, broke the scoreless tie with a bank shot 3-pointer for Hazen. The offensive flow of the game stalled for two more minutes before Hazen added another score. After Hazen’s second bucket of the game Beulah head coach Mary Hoherz called timeout.
Hoherz’s timeout didn’t immediately snap Beulah from their slow start. With 2:48 left Beulah finally got their first score of the game – a score by senior forward Courtney Mitchell – making it 7-2.
After Mitchell’s score the Miners added four more points, but the late offensive start did them no favors. At the end of one period Beulah trailed 12-6. Beulah needed more consistency on offense to counter Hazen’s strong start.
Early in the second quarter they got that consistency. Jamie Murschel, a junior post, scored consecutive inside buckets getting Beulah within two points 12-10. Once Beulah got close Hazen head coach John Ward called a timeout and refocused his team.
