Bison girls get big win
By Jarann Johnson
Late in the year everyone is fighting for a Region 7 opening round bye. The Bison were in a tough place Monday night. They were on the road needing a win to keep teams like Beulah, Bowman, and Killdeer – all with four region losses – away from them.
Hazen entered the game with three region losses, so Killdeer literally had a golden opportunity right at their door step. A loss for Hazen meant that teams like New England and Hettinger-Scranton – both with three region losses – would have an easier path to the coveted bye spots.
Both teams didn’t want to let their hopes of an open round bye slip away. In the first quarter Killdeer lead by five points 15-10 and in the second they bumped it up a little more to 23-16. The weak offensive third quarter seemed to keep going early in the third quarter for the Bison
The Bison were down 27-17 at one point, but then they got things going and cut away at Killdeer’s lead. The Bison ended the third quarter only down by six points 37-31. With their back up against the wall the Bison had the best offensive quarter of the game in the fourth – scoring 16 points – and forced overtime.
The game was tied 47-47 at the end of regulation but Hazen tightened up and pulled out the win in overtime. The Bison didn’t take the lead in the game until over time but once they got it they held on, winning 61-56.
