Bison take 6th overall at state
By Jarann Johnson
The Hazen Bison accomplished their preseason goal of earning a third straight trip to the state tournament. The Class B state tournament at the Fargodome represented gravy time – a chance to add on more accomplishments to a strong season.
The Bison took sixth place overall and had one player selected to the all-state all-tournament teams.
The luck of the draw isn’t something that favors Hazen. Hazen drew the No. 3-seed and defending state champions for their first match of the state tournament. LaMoure entered the tournament with the goal of repeating as state champs.
Early on Hazen was making LaMoure’s goal of repeating as state champs tough. The first set was tied three times; 4-4, 6-6, and 8-8. A hitting error by Mackenzie Reinhardt, junior middle, led to a 7-0 run by LaMoure that featured three Hazen hitting errors.
LaMoure took advantage of the hitting errors and pushed out to a 15-8 lead. Hazen’s timing continued to be off for most of the first set and LaMoure won the set 25-12.
The second set of the match featured early ties at 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8. LaMoure went on a 3-0 run which was capped by a lift violation committed by Grace Zimmerman.
