Bison volleyball fourth at state

By Jarann Johnson

The Hazen Bison really enjoy playing at the Minot State Dome. The Bison played the maximum amount sets at the Class B tournament hosted by Minot State last week – playing three five-set matches and finishing fourth overall.

Opening round
Hazen entered their opening round game as the No. 4-rated team in the tournament, and Grant County was unranked. According to the rankings it was supposed to be a Hazen win, but the only problem was that Grant County wasn’t paying attention to the tournament seeds.
Hazen got off to the start that they were expected to and led 4-0 after a kill by senior Autumn Johnson, and soon the score was 8-2 in favor of Hazen after a kill by junior Krista Slaubaugh.
The match went the unexpected route after that. Grant County figured out a way to nibble away at Hazen’s lead slowly, then used serving to grab a small lead.
Alyssa Mutschelknaus recorded three consecutive aces, giving Grant County a 14-11 lead. Grant County put together a 7-point run that was wedged between two Hazen errors – starting with a Slaubaugh serving error and ending with a Steph Ziegler hitting error – making the score 20-12.
