The Hazen Bison didn’t waste any time making a strong impression on the rest of the state. The 2015 Class B track and field girls state champs opened the 2016 season by qualifying six events.
The girls were led by hurdler Kaylene Klein. Klein state qualified the 100-hurdles and the 300-hurdles by taking first place in both events.
Klein ran a 16.74 seconds in the 100H and a 48.49 in the 300H. Both of her times were the first state-qualifying marks in the hurdle events this season. Klein also helped the 1600 meter relay team out.
Klein, Cece Pfliger, Callie Lemer and Eva Byerley combined to run a 4:32 in the relay for first place honors. The Bison also put up first place finishes in the 400- and 800-meter relay.
The 400-meter relay consisted of Elise Hintz, Klein, Raquel Doll and Katie Duttenhefer. The girls finished in 52.50, which is a state-qualifying time.
The 800-meter relay consisted of Hintz, Krista Slaubaugh, Doll and Duttenhefer. The girls took first place with a time of 1 minute and 50.44 seconds, which is a state-qualifier.
Hazen’s 400- and 800-meter relay times were ranked first in the state at the end of the week.
