Hazen almost gets comeback win
By Jarann Johnson
The Hazen Bison have been trying to find their mojo ever since Wyatt Carr went down with an injury. Friday night they found a little bit more of it but fail in a tight game at home 60-52 against New England.
The first quarter was back and forth. Hazen took a 7-6 lead after Isaac Doll completed two free throws with 4 minutes and 30 seconds left in the first quarter.
New England didn’t let Hazen stay in the lead for long. Junior guard Justin Cantwell scored and spurred an 8-0 run, which put New England up 14-7 with two minutes to play in the first.
Hazen didn’t wilt with New England seeming ready to pull away. Sophomore guard Jayce Zuern spurted a Hazen 6-0 run to end the period. At the end of one period, Hazen only trailed by one point, 14-13.
The score remained tight in the second period. Hazen junior guard Payton Leintz, 5-11, blocked New England’s 6-foot-7 post Cody Holt with five minutes left in the first half. Leintz’s highlight play fired up the Hazen fans but wasn’t enough to completely change the momentum.
New England went into the halftime break up 28-21. Hazen was doing a good job of forcing the ball away from Holt and needed to continue that in the second half if they were going to win.
