Hazen boys basketball almost come back

Last week the Hazen Bison faced off with Mott-Regent in the play-in round of the Region 7 tournament. Hazen entered the game hoping to avenge a regular-season loss to Mott-Regent. Mott-Regent came back from 18 points to win the first meeting in January 68-65. This time Mott-Regent held off Hazen’s comeback attempt for a 64-62 home playoff win.
Hazen got off to a slow start, only scoring eight first-quarter points and found themselves down 21-8 at the end of the first quarter. Hazen Head Coach Ben Nelson said his team missed some easy shots and Mott-Regent shot well to open the game.
“I don’t know if it was the tournament atmosphere or just their aggressiveness or what. But we missed a layup or two early and some close shots. They didn’t actually turn it into instant offense but they were hot from the outside early. They were standings a foot or more behind the 3-point line putting it up and it was going in,” Nelson said.
Mott-Regent made five 3-pointers in the first quarter and pushed their lead to about 20 points before Hazen made a move. Hazen went to a 1-3-1 zone to slow Mott-Regent down and the defense worked.
