Hazen girls advance to state

By Jarann Johnson

The Hazen Bison didn’t win the Region 5 tournament but they still  took away plenty of awards. Hazen senior Beth Leier won the meet and was named Region 5 Senior of the Year.
Leier’s day at the Mott Golf Course was impressive. The senior carded a 77 overall. Leier recorded a 38 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine for her championship score.
Megan McCarthy also had a strong day at the course, taking ninth overall to individually qualify for the state meet. McCarthy shot a 94.
Hazen’s No. 3-golfer Marrea Straub shot a 100, which was five strokes back from individual state  qualifying. The top 10 are awarded individual state tournament berths. Alexis Lamb (Beach) took the last spot taking 10th with a 95.
The final team score to come in for Hazen was sophomore Makaela Unterseher’s 110. Unterseher’s score helped finalize Hazen’s second place finish. The top three teams qualify for the team state tournament, which means Hazen will advance to the team state tournament.
