Hazen girls grab big win
By Jarann Johnson
Hazen needed to get a big win to keep their hopes of a regular season Region 7 title alive and did just that against Killdeer last week. Hazen topped Killdeer 62-57 for a big Region 7 win at home.
Hazen opened up a 34-24 lead on Killdeer heading into the halftime break but it didn’t look like the lead was going to hold.
Killdeer came out strong in the third quarter and cut Hazen’s lead down to two points with a Trae Murray basket. Raquel Doll, Hazen junior point guard, made a clutch 3-pointer, putting Hazen back up 40-35.
Killdeer didn’t back away and got a late bucket from Shawnee Hansen to cut Hazen’s lead to 1 point right before the end of the period. Hansen’s score made the score 44-43.
Killdeer started the fourth quarter with possession of the ball and a chance to take the lead but turned the ball over. Hazen didn’t squander their chance to increase the lead, getting a bucket from junior forward Grace Zimmerman putting her team up 46-43.
Hazen stayed in control of the lead from that point on and looked like they were going to secure a win with three minutes left. Hazen was up by seven points, 56-49, but Killdeer made a quick 5-0 run to close the gap, which included a Bridgette Reiss 3-pointer.
