Hazen girls lose defensive game
By Jarann Johnson
Hazen held down one of the best players in Region 6 girls basketball and played great defense but they couldn’t find their offensive rhythm and suffered a 45-33 home loss last weekend.
The defensive pace of the game was set early. Both teams struggled to score in the opening quarter and near the midpoint of the quarter, Hazen led 4-3 after a free throw split by Hazen senior guard Tia Bornemann.
Neither team gained a big advantage and the period ended with DLB up 11-9. Des Lacs-Burlington pushed their lead to 17-11 in the second quarter but foul trouble gave them issues. Hazen stayed in the game by drawing fouls and making bonus free throws while their offense was struggling.
Hazen senior guard Laekyn Schwab made four free throws and junior Hope Ternes made two, which drew Hazen within three points of DLB 20-17. Hazen got one big momentum uplifter right before the first half came to a close.
