Hazen legion baseball headed to state
By Jarann Johnson
There’s been a rivalry brewing between Hazen and Burlington for a few years. Last weekend another summer showdown was added to the rivalry. Both teams met in Lansford to decide who the Class B West champion would be.
Hazen entered the American Legion Class B West Region tournament as the top seed and Burlington came into the tournament as the No.2-seed. The roles were switched for the championship. Burlington was the favorite because they had their curve ball specialist Jarrett Vendsel on the mound. Hazen was the underdog because they were trying to come back and win the tournament from the loser-out side of the bracket.
Hazen starting pitcher Jayce Zuern escaped multiple daunting situations during the game. Zuern’s first daunting situation came in the bottom of the first. Jacob Ruden approached the plate with two outs and runners on first and third.
Zuern stayed composed and earned a strikeout to escape. During the bottom of the third inning, Zuern found himself back in the same spot – runners on first and third with two outs. He was once again able to collect a strikeout.
