Hazen now 3-2
By Jarann Johnson
Entering this year, expectations were high for the Hazen Bison baseball team. The Bison were coming off a Legion state tournament appearance and got most of that team and a few other faces out for high school baseball this spring.
Five games into the season, expectations are still growing.
The Bison started the year with a 1-2 showing at the very competitive Shiloh Invite. The Bison weren’t blown out in any of their games and lost two close games. But that weekend gave them confidence in their ability to compete with the state’s best.
That ability to compete helped the Bison get a big, big region sweep last week. The Hazen Bison topped Shiloh Christian, a Region 8 favorite. Both games were somewhat of a surprise around Region 8 because Shiloh entered with an 11-0 record and the Bison entered with a misleading 1-2 overall losing record.
But after the doubleheader sweep the Bison were 3-2 and had more belief that they can reach their season goal – a region championship. Getting those wins against Shiloh wasn’t easy for the Bison though. They needed Kolby Metzger, senior pitcher, to close out both games for one-run wins, 7-6 and 8-7. The 8-7 game was decided in three extra innings.
