Hazen slips in Region 7 tourney semis
By Jarann Johnson
One wrong step and Hazen’s season went into danger mode. Hazen fell to Heart River 3-0 at the Region 7 tournament hosted by Dickinson Trinity last week. Hazen senior setter Elise Hintz rolled her ankle early in the region semifinals and Hazen never quite recovered losing 26-24, 26-24, 25-23.
The first set started competitively without either team taking control of the game. Heart River tied the set at 10-10 with a Bailey Olson block. Olson’s block started a 4-0 Heart River streak and gave her team a 13-10 lead.
Hazen responded with their own 3-0 counter to tie the game 13-13. But there wasn’t any time for Hazen fans to celebrate the tie. Hazen fans were worrisome because of the ankle injury Hintz suffered.
Hazen head coach Linette Irwin plugged in freshman setter Paige Erhardt to replace Hintz. But Hazen was in shock without one of their best players. Heart River went on a 4-0 run which included a highlight pancake dig and an ace.
Irwin elected to call timeout and calm her team after the big injury. The timeout worked and Hazen tussled back into the game forcing a 21-21 tie on a CeCe Pfliger kill. The set continued being a battle.
