Hazen VB struggles to close matches
By Jarann Johnson
Sometimes champions forget how to win. Last Saturday at the Coal Country Invite that’s how it looked for the Hazen Bison. The 3-time Region 7 champs tied their first three matches of pool play, then lost two tournament matches before finally collecting their first win of the year.
Hazen’s win lifted them to seventh place overall in the tournament, which is hosted by Beulah and Hazen.
Hazen started the tournament in their own gym Saturday morning with pool play. Lewis and Clark, Kenmare, and New Salem where the other teams in Hazen’s pool.
Hazen didn’t earn any sweeps during their pool play matches. They tied with New Salem, taking the first set 25-21 and falling 23-25 in the second set. The Coal Country Invite doesn’t allow ties in pool play. The winners of a 1-1 draw are determined by who scores more points total.
Hazen outscored New Salem 48-46 to collect the win. The next match of pool play was similar. Hazen lost the first set 23-25 and won the second set 25-17, which gave them a 48-42 win.
