Hazen fans were excited to sneak in a rare early April home baseball game last week against Central McLean. Central McLean never led in the game and fell 12-0, 8-2.
Dylan Martell, senior, started opening day for Hazen and made sure to make it a strong start. Martell retired Central McLean in 1-2-3 order in the top of first. Martell also drew a walk in the bottom of the first, making himself the first Hazen batter to reach base of the season.
Hunter Keller, a sophomore, followed with a walk and Steven Baardson batted in the first run of the year with a single. Hazen kept the pressure on loading the bases and drawing for more walks for runs. Isaac Doll, Hazen junior, batted in a run on a fielder’s choice, putting Hazen up 6-0. Hazen pushed their lead to 7-0 on a double-steal and ended the first inning in full control of the game.
Martell kept performing well on the pitching mound, pushing his strikeout total to five and keeping Central McLean scoreless. Hazen senior Seth Olander added a 2-run single in the bottom frame pushing Hazen to a 9-0 lead.
