Hazen wins showdown with Beulah volleyball

By Jarann Johnson

The Hazen Bison have had the Beulah Miners’ number the past few seasons. Last week Beulah tried to flip the switch at home in regional play, but Hazen was having none of it.
Hazen swept Beulah to remain perfect in Region 7 play 3-0: 25-10, 25-21 and 25-14.
Beulah scored the first point of the game with an Abbey Shantz kill. Shantz, a senior outside, couldn’t keep her strong start going and committed a serving error.
Hazen didn’t waste any time proving why they are the reigning Region 7 champs. The Bison went on a 7-1 run capped by an ace from junior outside Grace Zimmerman.
Zimmerman’s ace gave Hazen an 8-2 lead and forced Beulah Head Coach Brian Filibeck to call timeout. After the timeout Beulah wiggled their way back into the game, cutting Hazen’s lead down to 13-10.
Beulah couldn’t figure out a way to keep battling back the rest of the set and struggled to counter Hazen’s block. Hazen’s defense recorded two blocks and didn’t allow a single Beulah point the rest of the set.
Hazen’s defensive wall helped them win the first set 25-10.
