Hazen wins West Region, headed to state
By Jarann Johnson
Hazen Post 189 entered the postseason with a target on their backs. Everyone wanted to take Hazen down but few had actually done it during the regular season.
Hazen entered the Class B West Region tournament with a 19-1 regular season West Region record. The final test for Hazen’s historical West Region run was topping Kidder County in the championship round at Dwyer Field, Bismarck.
The game started out with both teams throwing scoreless frames. Josh Snyder started for Hazen at pitcher and Ty Biesterfeld started for Kidder County at pitcher.
Snyder continued to pitch scoreless frames in the top of the second and Biesterfeld seemed like he was going to double his count of scoreless frames. Biesterfeld collected two outs and was close to escaping the inning, but Jeremy Leintz didn’t let him.
Leintz hit a one-run single, giving Hazen an early lead of 1-0 in the bottom of the second. Snyder kept his strong pitching performance going for one more inning, and Hazen entered the fourth inning up 1-0.
