Northstars go 1-2 at tourney

The Northstars seemed to have strong momentum heading into the Holiday tournament they host every winter. The Northstars entered the tournament on a 2-game winning streak but the tournament didn’t start off on a good note.
The Northstars lost their first game of the tournament by four goals. The final score of the tournament opener was a 6-2 loss to Bismarck High’s junior varsity team.
The Northstars struggled to get out of the funk again the next night. During the second night of the tournament the Northstars fell 13-2 to Pierre (South Dakota).
Two nights and two losses negated all of the momentum the Northstars had built before the tournament and the team was starting from scratch on the final day of the tournament. The Northstars didn’t want to have three consecutive weak showings and proved it during their tournament finale against Mayville-Portland.
Beulah-Hazen won the season finale 8-4 ending the tournament with a 1-2 record and an overall record of 3-5 this season. Northstars’ Head Coach Dan Frei felt like his team’s weak play on the first two nights of the tournament was because of team play, which lacked unity.
“As a team we were pretty individualistic. I think for the first couple of games we didn’t move the puck very well, we made a lot of wrong decisions that were based on, I think, individual ‘aspirations’ on team from top to bottom. We had Defensemen trying to make checks when it was not the right time to make a check,” Frei said. “We had forwards who were turning the puck over at the blue line, instead of getting it out. We had guys who wouldn’t back-check hard. Goal-tending was not spectacular.”
