Runners from around Coal Country

By Jarann Johnson

There are tons of different weekend warrior sports. But the sport most weekend warriors avoid is running. The running community has been trending upwards the last 20 years and the effect can be felt locally.
Coal Country has runners with various levels of dedication. There’s strong former college runners, speedsters, serious marathoners and novice runners trying to meet new goals. Amber Blackhurst won the Fargo Marathon 5K (1st out of 3437), Brandon Schirado was second in his age group for the Fargo Marathon 10K (2nd out of 131) and Mark Sailer qualified for the prestigious Boston Marathon.
There are also typical weekend warriors like Mike Tietz. Tietz self-categorizes himself as a slow runner. There are plenty of great hidden Coal Country running stories.
