Layton Sailer, a soon-to-be Hazen freshman, had a busy junior high rodeo reason. He won two state titles and qualified for nationals in three different events.
Sailer qualified for nationals in team roping, calf roping and steer wrestling. During the state competition, Sailer took first in team roping with his partner Ryan Inglis. Ingles is from Regan, which is halfway between Wilton and Wing on Highway 36.
Sailer said team roping is a two-man event.
“For team roping, you have a header who ropes the head. Then he turns left and the heeler, which I heel, tries to catch two feet. If you catch one it’s a plus-five penalty,” Sailer aid.
Sailer also earned a first-place showing at the state rodeo in calf roping. He said calf roping is an event where athletes have to avoid causing a jerk-down.
