Top-ranked Bison keep on rolling
By Jarann Johnson
The Hazen Bison knew Heart River was a dangerous team entering their home Region 4 showdown last week. Heart River entered the game as the only current Class A Region 4 team with a victory over the Bison in the last four seasons.
Heart River knew that an upset win would cement their place in the playoffs, but the Bison were having none of that and took the game 42-16. But early on it didn’t look like it was going to be another easy Region 4 win for the Bison.
Heart River produced a potent running attack on their first drive and slithered into Hazen territory, reaching the 34-yard line. That’s when the Hazen defense tightened up and stopped Heart River’s running attack.
The Bison stopped a fourth-and-3 attempt to gain possession of the ball and give their offense a try at opening up the game. The Bison’s offense was a little off until one big play on the drive.
Hazen faced a fourth-and-4 on the 39-yard line when their starting quarterback found a way to get things going. Connor Doll ran past the first-down marker and didn’t stop until he was in the end zone, making the score 6-0 in favor of Hazen.
On the Bison’s next drive Hunter Steffen, senior running back, set things up with a big 45-yard run. But it was once again Doll who put the finishing touches on the drive, running in a 1-yard touchdown, making the score 14-0 before the end of the first period.
