Flooded Minot family moves on

By Erica Kingston, BHG Intern

Throughout all this flooding, countless families have been put out of their homes and dispersed to campers, cabins, relatives’ homes and various other temporary locations until they can return home to assess the untold damages. Several Minot families found their ties to Washburn to be a safe haven. Kelly (Sailer) Stewart, originally from Washburn, along with her husband Matt and their children, 4-year-old Treyton and 2-year-old Mason, stayed in Washburn at her parents’ home when they were evacuated for the second time from their home in Minot. The Stewarts were told to leave their house on May 31. A short five days later they were able to return. Not knowing what the future might hold, they didn’t completely unpack their belongings. “We did know (what would happen,)” Kelly said. “In our basement, when we first got evacuated, we ripped up our carpet. We thought we would see what would all happen. We were home for three weeks, maybe. We didn’t think it would happen like this.”
