Counselor Rick Heidt was a teacher for 14 years and an assistant principal for 17 years. He has also served as director of student activities for the North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders. Heidt presented the workshops across school staff and employees and to parents and the general public in McClusky on August 22, culminating in the evening presentation to the public in the school gymnasium at 7 p.m.
The school’s effort in presenting the bullying program is partly connected to passage of HB 1465 that was introduced during the 2011 North Dakota legislative session.
In the bill, it is required that every school district must develop and implement a bullying policy. This is part of an effort to curb bullying behavior which has far-reaching personal and social consequences and the legislation was designed to allow districts the flexibility to create a policy and select a program or cur-riculum that best meets their school and community culture, climate and values.
