But their excitement at being part of the Region 5 girls basketball tournament Monday is tempered as one of the team’s stars, Whitney Huesers, suffered a leg injury late in the third quarter Monday night.
It was bound to happen eventually -- the Trojan Dynasty has finally been toppled. After dominating the District 10 Tournament for half a decade, the Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans were taken down by the Washburn Cardinals this year.
The Garrison Troopers boys basketball team is peaking at the right time. District tournament play begins in a week. The Troopers pulled out an exciting 77-69 overtime win Monday against Flasher on the strength of Ian MacDonald’s unconscious 32 points. Ian was stellar in the overtime session, canning a trey and going 6-6 at the line. Jason Mattheis, coach of the Troopers, said Monday’s win was another good one for the team in spite of a weak finish..
After a short break to allow the junior varsity teams to hold their annual tournament this past weekend, the Garrison Troopers varsity swings back into action to close out the regular season. Tuesday, the Troopers boys and girls teams traveled to Washburn to take on the Cardinals.
