Golfers poised for regionals
By STU MERRY
It’s just begun, but already it’s regional tournament time for golf teams across North Dakota, including the Garrison-Max Troopers.
An individual regional qualifier for the boys’ squad will be Friday at the Souris Valley Golf Course in Minot. Monday will be the boys’ regional qualifier, said boys’ Coach Mark Harris. A second individual regional qualifier will be May 14 at Rugby.
On Saturday, the boys’ team traveled to Rugby for a meet, coming home with a seventh place finish in a 10-team field. The team shot a 398. Harris didn’t mince words, saying the team had a tough day.
He went on to say that if the golfers shoot where they are capable of the team stands a good chance to qualify for state.
“I feel good about their possibilities,” Harris said. “But they will have to shoot well to make it happen.”
Harris noted that some of the younger golfers would have to contribute, stepping up their game, to help the Troopers attain their team goal of a trip to state.
“The qualifier on Saturday will give us a reading on where we are at,” Harris observed.
The girls golf team traveled to Velva Monday for the first individual qualifier. According to Coach Loni Hall, no girls shot the required 87 to qualify.
“As a team Garrison shot a 438 which earned us a third place finish,” Hall said.
First place honors went to Dunseith. The team carded a 407. Next up for the girls will be a meet in Rugby today (Thursday).
