Grant County blanks Troop

Grant County blanks Troop
The Garrison-Max Troopers began their 2009 campaign on a sour note this past Friday, being blanked by Grant County-Flasher in Elgin 24-0.
In spite of the loss Coach Cory Volk said things went relatively well.
“We were physical and tackled well,” he said. “We played hard but not to the top of our potential.”
The Troop had a couple of chances to make plays, according to Volk.
“(But) we just couldn’t quite get there,” he added.
The “close but no cigar” plays Volk referred to were a couple of dropped passes, a couple of inopportune off side penalties, a blocked punt and two interceptions. Those miscues either stopped Trooper drives, kept drives alive for Grant County, or set up touchdowns for the Storm, Volk said.
“We felt good about our effort and we were really happy that we made it out without an injury,” he said. “The mistakes we made were more mental then physical so we’ll just keep working in practice and see if we can shore things up.”
Looking at his players, Volk observed Connor Slattery put in a good effort, leading the team in rushing and tackles.
“He really carried us,” Volk praised.
On the defensive side, Volk noted Dan Gackle “really shined on the line and made a lot of plays.”
