Powwow gets surprise guest
By Jerry W. Kram
Hundreds of dancers performed at the Santee Lucky Mound Powwow south of Parshall last week, but this year’s event had a different feel to thanks to a famous visitor.
Dancers from this year powwow will have more exposure than usual because a film and photography crew recorded hours of the event to be used in a commercial for the sportswear and shoe company Adidas that will feature the well known artist Pharrell Williams. Williams is a rapper, musician, producer and is a coach on the television music competition The Voice.
Dusty Olson, president of this year’s powwow, said Williams' offer was a pleasent surprise.
"They are going to be shooting a commercial here," Olson said. "The dancers will be a part of that. It’s a little different and a little exciting to see what comes out of it. I’m glad they picked this powwow."
Managing to keep the powwow running on time while catering to the needs of the production company and making sure the filming wasn’t too disruptive was a juggling act for Olson. But when the long days were finished, he felt he had managed to balance all of the competing needs.
