An internship with accounting and business consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has given Lee Rensch far more than hands-on experience with a calculator.
Rensch, who grew up outside of New Town, was selected to spend a few days volunteering at a financial literacy camp for schoolchildren in Belize City, Belize. Only 100 interns from a pool of 2,000 nationally were chosen to go on the trip.
At the camp, Rensch, another intern and two associates worked with a class of around 28 children ages seven to 12. The children were divided into groups and taught the basics of starting their own business. With the help of their PwC teachers, they learned to come up with a name, slogan and budget.
Rensch felt the budget part was especially important. “There’s a need for business in the area,” he said, describing Belize City as poverty-stricken, crime-ridden and dirty. “Some of (the kids) didn’t have shoes. We provided them with lunch, and some of them would eat a few bites and save the rest for their families. They were just amazing kids.”
