Defense carries Braves to victory
By Jerry W. Kram
The Parshall Braves boys basketball team is a team with a target on their back. The returning Region 8 Champions lost just one starter to graduation and are ranked ninth in the North Dakota Class B Basketball Poll. They claimed their first two victories of the year to begin the process of making another run to get to the state tournament in March, outdistancing Des Lacs Burlington 79-68 and outlasting Washburn 55-52.
Head Coach Wade Baker said every team is going to try their best against Parshall this year. The DLB Lakers certainly put on a good show in front of a packed gym in Parshall. Both teams opened up fast, with the Lakers taking an early 19-14 lead in the first six minutes of the game. The Lakers used the long bomb in the first half, sinking seven three point shots.
"We weren’t closing up," Baker said. "We were watching these guys shoot and they were getting away with a lot of easy open shots. We made changes at halftime to get more aggressive on those shots."
The Braves started feeding the ball inside to Monte Goodbird and Billy Johnson while Deyondre Simpson added shots from the outside and drives to the basket to end the first quarter with an 11-4 run for a 25-23 lead.
