High School stars shine in Elbowoods Classic

By Logan J. Davis
Some of the best Native American high school basketball players in a four-state region had a chance to showcase their skills last weekend. The Elbowoods Classic is rapidly becoming one of the premier basketball tournaments where native teams can face great competition.
The end of the high school basketball season does not mean the love for the game ends. The exciting tournament held in New Town had many high-quality teams participating allowing many area players to continue their passion for basketball.
The tournament had teams from Montana, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota and the games were all highly-entertaining. When the dust settled, it was the boys team from Wood Lake from the Spirit Lake Nation who claimed a hard-fought for championship trophy and a team made up of several girls from the MHA Nation took home first place. The head coordinator of the tournament is Darian Morsette. According to Morsette, the Elbowoods Classic Tournament is in its fifth year and growing every year and that Wood Lake had some amazing players on their squad.
