The Makoti Mavericks made some noise this past week at the Section 6 American Legion Baseball Tournament in Watford City. Unfortunately, the parade to a second straight state tournament was derailed by a pack of Muskrats – Renville County Muskrats.
The Mavs advanced to Friday’s winner’s bracket prevailing 4-3 over Watford City this past Thursday, thanks to a three-run home run by Trevor Baker late in the game. A big part of the victory was the strong performance of starter Caleb Karna who tossed a complete game one-hitter. Karna fanned 10.
Makoti opened the tournament with a 6-1 win over Garrison-Max-Central McLean, avenging an earlier 23-6 loss to the Titans July 16. Jaren Enockson threw a four-hitter, fanning 13 as Makoti advanced.
The performance drew praise from Coach Orville Drosdal.
“Coming into the sectionals as the No. 6 seed, we were pleased with the third place finish, but felt we would’ve liked to get to the Saturday championship games.”
The Mavericks were defending sectional champions.
“With Caleb Karna and Jaren Enockson, we liked our starting pitching for the first two games,” Drosdal added.
