New Town shines in wrestling marathon
Billy Hall remains undefeated at 152 pounds after winning the individual championship in the New Town Invitational wrestling tournament held last Saturday in New Town High School.
Hall wrestled his way to the top and took the championship by pinning Rugby’s Zach Berube in 1:26. He was joined by Eric Danks, who remains unbeaten at 15-0 this season after winning his title at 215 pounds with a win over Kyle Johnson of Stanley.
Their performances helped the Eagles to a third-place finish in the annual tournament held in early January that saw 11 teams coming to town.
Sidney, Mont., won the tournament with a 170.5 score, followed by Minot High School junior varsity with 147, edging out the Eagles by a single point.
Other teams included, Des Lacs/Burlington, 115; Rugby, 105; Stanley, 81.5; Minot Ryan, 54; Harvey, 48.5; Turtle Mountain junior varsity, 48; Minot C squad, 46; Turtle Mountain C squad, 35; Velva JV, 26 and Kenmare-Tioga-Ray, 15.
New Town advanced seven wrestlers to the championship matches and crowned the two individual champions in Danks and Hall. Both Danks and Hall pinned all of their opponents in the first period.
The Eagles also had five other wrestlers in the championship finals finishing in second place. Jess Hall at 130 pounds, Jesse Bear at 145, Jace Uran at 171, Sheldon Standish at 189, and Slade Stringer at heavyweight all took second in their respective weight classes.
Wyatt Thompson of Rugby won at 130 over Jess Hall in a 7-3 decision, Andy Pitner, Minot, beat Bear 4-1, Randy Green of Sidney won over Uran in a fall in 5:52, Standish fell to Casey Karnopp of Belcourt in 2:30 and John Desjarlais of Belcourt uphended Stringer in 2:48.
In addition, Clay Young Bird took fourth at 189; Jacob Mills was fifth at 160 and Zach Danks was sixth at 140.
