Parshall girls take top honors in West Region

Parshall girls take top honors in West Region
Woods wins girls event; Wells wins boys event

It may not have been a surprise that Alexis Woods took top spot in the West Region girls cross country meet Saturday in Bowman. Woods is a strong runner who has been improving the length of the season.
What may be a bigger surprise is that four Parshall harriers finished in the top 20, which propeled the Lady Braves to a first-place finish, beating Beulah-Hazen by 16 points for the West Region title.
Clearly, Woods ran away from the competition. Her time of 15:50 was 22 faster than New Town’s Symbria Bell and nearly a minute faster than Beulah-Hazen’s Sarah Grimm, who finished third.
Head coach Harlan Johnson was pleased with Woods’ performance, suggesting before the meet that the seasoned ninth-grader was ready to work hard and earn her spot. She did just that after working hard early in the season to gain prominence that was needed in West Region competition.
Woods’ run loomed large in the Lady Braves taking top spot, but Johnson pointed out that any number of other girls could rise to the occasion at any time and that is exactly what happened in Bowman.
Kiara Packineau came in sixth, Devanee Hale was ninth and Desiree Wells finished 13th to take Parshall to the top to finish ahead of Beulah-Hazen, Killdeer, Stanley, Watford City and New Town.
Patricia Dixon, Sheyenne Fox, Shelly Smith, Veronica Lyson and Sierra Rensch also ran respectable races to help the Parshall girls as a team.
