Bond vote goes down

Bond vote goes down

A marquee at a local church said, “Pray. Listen. Vote.” Garrison school patrons made it a point to do at least the latter Tuesday.
A surprisingly large turnout of 609 voters turned out to defeat a $9 million bond election to expand and renovate the elementary and high schools. Only 300 ballots were printed at the start of the 7 a.m. election. Two re-printings were just enough to satisfy the large turnout.
Only 34.8 percent of the voters gave a “yes,” sending the measure down by almost a 2-to-1 margin. More than 60 percent majority was needed to pass the bond election.
The question of raising the district’s indebtedness was turned down when only 31.9 percent of the voters approved it.
