New Town on ice

By Jerry W. Kram
Last Saturday dawned clear and not too cold, making it a perfect day for skating. So it was a good thing that was the day North Segment dedicated a brand new ice skating rink located behind the Northern Lights Wellness Center on College Drive.
North Segment Representative Monica Mayer said that Scott Baker will be managing the rink for the segment. Baker said the rink will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Plans are to install permanent lighting at the rink and add benches, hockey nets, and a warming hut to the facilities. For now, there is a storage shed filled with 53 pairs of hockey skates the skaters can borrow. Meyer said if no one is on duty at the rink, skaters can ask Security at the Northern Lights building for access to the skates.
“I have to thank my staff,” Meyer said. “It takes a good staff to make things happen.”
Mayer herself donned skates for the ribbon cutting for the regulation sized 200x100 foot rink. She was joined by North Segment staff and about two dozen skaters who were eager to break in the new ice.
